“Acolyte” is from the Greek word “akolouthos” which means helper / attendant. The ministry of acolytes in the Church dates almost to its beginning (in the 3rd century A.D.) Acolytes assist the priest during worship services. They can also carry the cross or a banner to the altar, and light the candles on the altar before the service begins. Any baptized, school aged child is invited to sign-up.
